Thefirst Natural Canonpresented on the site is in what we callDiatonic Harmonywhich operates within aDiatonic Windowin a given key, major(here C major) orminor, possibly both, but without any kind of rhythmic structure. There is no specific
beginning, and especially no specific end, and the rhythmic position of each chord
(on the Beat or on the Off-beat) is in no way indicated. A performancecanonis produced from the original complete harmonic structure by pruning/erasing the notes
at the beginning so that each performing voice (SATB) comes in on the same Orbit,
in this caseOrbit 0. But there is still no specific end, no rhythmic quality, and this is probably its
most evident musical "weakness" or at least incompleteness. Specifying the rhythmic
nature of each chord, and thereby placing us inMelodic Harmony, seems the simplest and most evident way of increasing the musical quality and interest
of these Natural Canons. This addition of rhythmic form, as well as the different
harmonic possibilities of changing Swings, will not require any form of human creativity,
imagination, or intuition whatsoever, only simple mechanical, technical manipulation.
