Tutorial
This Chapter is meant as a new tutorial
for Harmony beginners,
with the following objectives:

Objectives

  • Make your work easier
    • Working with Triads can be quite frustrating because
      • there is not enough information in Triads to make them reliable
      • one is constantly faced with exceptions and "sometimeses"
    • One is offered "rules of thumb" and then encouraged to abandon them because
      • results are "dull"
    • Working with Tetrads is more pleasant and more productive because
      • there is no longer any need to "double" notes, having enough to go around
      • the Voice-leading is much more evident and reliable
    • When we see how Triads are generated from Tetrads
      • all the doubling becomes obvious by the process of substitution
      • the Voice-leading remains exactly as it was in the Tetrad
    • There is also far more to Triads than before, as we discover that
      • any Triad can be preceded and followed by any other Triad
    • Advanced students will tell you that Harmony becomes simpler when sevenths are "added".

  • Get better marks
    • We cannot guarantee your getting A+s regularly because
    • However, you should be able to remain in the B-to A range fairly easily.

  • Understand Harmony better
    • Thinking in terms of Tetrads, and generating all kinds of Triads from them
      • provides a much better understanding of what Harmony is all about
      • will simplify your work with Triads forever
