Pedagogy / Harmony 101 / Preface

Lessons

Each lesson will attack a specific subject in the habitual order of academic presentation.
For now we have selected the first three topics -
          1.Triads In Root Position
          2.The Minor Mode
          3.Inversions
In each lesson you will find the following sections -
     1. "Getting Ready" in which we present the MusicNovatory concepts
(mostly concerning the various procedures of generating and transforming Tetrads)
which you will need to handle your homework efficiently,
with possibly a wrap-up called "Summary and Analysis".
     2. "Doing Your Homework" in which you will apply these concepts
and where we will need your feed-back to understand your specific problems more clearly.

Getting Ready

In the first lesson, you will first be given a short briefing about the essentials of Tetrads -
     1. In the Diatonic Major Mode, using only the 4 Tetrads of the nucleus,V7 ,I6 ,IV6 , andI7 ,
and using them only 2 at a time in what we call a "swing" which oscillates back and forth,
in a particularly fruitful Voice-leading which produces 4 canonic lines.
     2. Using all the 7 Tetrads of the Diatonic Major Mode,I7 ,IV7 ,VII7 ,III7 ,VI7 ,II7 ,V7 , andI,
with all the Tetrads in the same direction, in what we call a "circle"
which returns to the TONIC at the end, also producing canonic lines.
     3. We will then tie in the 2 swings of the Diatonic Major Mode
with a mixture of circle and swing procedures,
               using the same 4 Tetrads of the nucleus,V7 ,I7 ,IV6 , andI6 .
In all of these cases, you will be shown how to produce 2 kinds of Triads,
Real Triads, composed of the root, the third, and the fifth of the original Tetrad, and
Deceptive Triads, in which theCOMMON TONEhas been removed,
and which can very easily be confused with another Real Triad (and usually is).
Each note of these Triads (Real or Deceptive)
will maintain the same function and Voice-leading which it had in the original Tetrad.
Eventually, an analysis of all "Triad Progressions" (by 5th, by 2nd, and by 3rd,)
will be presented with constant reference to the fundamental Tetrads.

Doing your homework

Here, you will refer to the work previously accomplished in "Getting Ready",
to handle whatever is required in the homework.
In case of trouble or doubt, drop us a line.
We will need your help to know more about what you are asked to do,
and this information will enable us to be more helpful.

On toTriads in Root Position.
