Keyboard Harmony / Uniform Keyboard / Exercises / First Step

The First Step

The first step consists of using only the notes of the ditone (Ta Vo Ti),
with the hands in contrary motion, the same fingers in both hands.

First Step 1

The Vocentro phonema have been added for each hand,
to identify the relative pitch of each note.
     Children might enjoy singing them,
playing only one hand at a time.

This exercise is arbitrarily written in F# major to place it in the center of the keyboard,
          symmetrically disposed around middle D.
However, children could, and should, play it in every imaginable position.
Both hands (fingers 234) should be in the same row, a, b, c, d, or e,
with 3 empty spaces (note-keys) between the 2 hands.

This is how this exercise would look on the Vocentro staff

In order to coincide with the previous example,
written on an absolute, conventional staff,
and to hear the music in the same key,
the first noteTawould correspond to F#.

First Step 1a

First Step 1 is now performed as a canon, with the right hand leading.
The same fingers at the same time, and the Vocentro phonema, as before.

khukfs01a

NOTE how similar it is to the original First Step 1 with only 2 small changes :
the left hand starts a bar late,
and also plays its note on the second beat a bar later.
The hands remain in contrary motion.

First Step 1b

First Step 1 is again performed as a canon, now with the left hand leading.

NOTE that it is still similar to the original First Step 1 :
here the right hand starts a bar late,
and also plays its note on the second beat a bar later.
Again, the hands remain in contrary motion.

First Step 2

Once again on notes of the ditone in contrary motion,
still arbitrarily written in F# major, symmetrically disposed around middle D.

khukfs02

There is a greater variety of note-values here,
          with half-notes, quarter-notes, and eighth-notes.
A little fanfare coda at the end acts as an introduction to chord performance.
