RAINBOW SHIFT (THE)
A 2-cell combination in which the Off-beat of cell 2 is derived from the Beat of cell 1, named afterOver The Rainbow(in bars 6-7) suggesting a shift of focus and attention to a larger level, producing a lofty, majestic effect

REBOUND
The notes which follow a Beat, usually producing a form ofFeminine Rhyme.

REBOUND ASSOCIATION
The Off-beat of a specific level is associated with the preceding Beat of the same level. This invariably occurs at smaller levels.

REBOUND GROUPING
Notes grouped with Rebound Association.

RESOLUTION (OF THE SECONDARY NOTES)
Resolution is the reduction of tension by one degree
Orbit 3always resolves toOrbit 2of the next chord
Orbit 2normally resolves toOrbit 1of the next chord.

RETARDATION
The displacement of a note in TIME, by placing (performing) it later than its normal, original position,

RHYMES
The different rhythmical forms of the Beat of a Cell. It possesses a MasculineRhymeif its note-value remains intact and a Feminine Rhyme if its note-value is subdivided, usually in two equal parts.

RHYTHM
A structured time-container in which sound will be inserted, which one feels in the whole body, mostly in the feet, far more than one sees or even hears. It is the most fundamental of the three structures of Music, and, with Harmony, is indispensable to Melody.

RHYTHMIC CELL
Composed of an Off-beat followed by a Beat (usually followed by a breath), the rhythmic cell is the material of which large rhythmic levels are made, making all these large levels of similar shape, merely of different sizes.

RHYTHMIC LEVELS
For every size of note-value, from the smallest of a given melody to one half the size of the whole piece,
there is what we call a Rhythmic Level in which Beats and Off-Beats alternate.
A level may start with either a Beat or an Off-beat,
but will generally end on a Beat (if there is no Feminine Rhyme).
The small levels of a melody are irregular because the small note-values do not appear everywhere.
They may start on either a Beat or an Off-beat, and bear negative numbers (-3, -2, -1).
The large levels are regular.
They will always start on an Off-beat, and bear positive numbers (+1, +2, +3...)
Level 0 is the smallest of these large levels and is the most important level for performance and analysis.
All the large levels are composed of what we call "Rhythmic Cells".
