Swings and Circles are the building blocks of Harmony
They could be compared to scales and arpeggios in performance.
We strongly recommend that you evaluate your understanding and grasp of these blocks
by trying your hand at building them -
in different keys, and
in different dispositions.
All this can be accomplished on 2 staves (treble and bass clefs),
with 3 lines in the treble clef and 2 in the bass clef
when the Fundamental Bass is used, and
with 2 lines in each clef
when the Fundamental Bass is left out.
Always think in terms of functions of a chord
COMMON TONE,PROPER TONE,MEDIAN,MOTRIX,
and not in terms of notes.
We recommend that you indicate the function of each note
by placing some form of abbreviation beside it -
the first (or last) letter of each function (C, P, M, X), or
"Orbit"numbersindicating tension (0, 1, 2, 3) which we will be using later.
Each exercise will indicate -
the Key (always a major key),
the disposition of the functions of the first chord (possibly theFundamentalBass)
placed in ascending order.
