5/8 Bars

You might enjoy changing some 6/8 songs into 5/8 by removing the secondEight noteof each bar -

Carnival Of Venice
Skaters' Waltz
Mexican Hat Dance
La Raspa

Change the original 4/4 to 6/8 and then to 5/8 -
She'll be Comin' Round The Mountain

All Ternary Levels

This exercise consists in performing the required ablations for producing all the ternary levels of a song,
in this case, a very simple one,Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.
Since this song already has a TernaryLevel +3+4,
with its ABA form (instead of AABA),
we will start with its basic Binary form at all levels,
by adding an A section at the beginning.
We now have 32 bars of 2/2, with 2Half notes in most bars.
Ablations will be made of the first quarter in the iambic (pick-up) structure of the large levels,
and of the second beat in the trochaic (rebound) structure of the smaller levels.
These ablations can be made in 2 ways -
either by removing the musical matter completely (at larger levels)
or by halving the values of all the note-values in the first half of a bar (at smaller levels).
Intermediate levels present a teasing possibility of choice.

1. The first (largest) TernaryLevel +3+4will be produced by
removing the first quarter of the whole piece (8 bars once),
leaving the ABA form in which we always knew this song.
2. The next TernaryLevel +2+3will be produced by
removing the first quarter of the each half of the piece (4 bars twice),
leaving the the second half of the first A, the complete second A,
the second half of B, and the complete last A.
3. The next TernaryLevel +1+2will be produced by
removing the first quarter of the each quarter of the piece (2 bars 4 times),
leaving the three last quarters of each section (the first A, the second A, the B, and the last A).
4. The next TernaryLevel 0+1will be produced by
halving all the note-values in the first half of each eighth of the piece
               (each large bar atLevel +1),
          in bars 4-5, 8-9, 12-13, 16-17, 20-21, 24,25, 28-29, and by extension, in bars 32-1,
removing one bar each time and gouping the bars by 3.
5. The last (smallest) TernaryLevel -10will be produced by
halving all the note-values in the first half of each sixteenth of the piece
               (each large bar atLevel 0),
          in bars 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32,
removing half-a-bar each time and producing bars of 3/2.
These last 2 Ternary Levels were seen inChanging Meters.
