Creation of Musical Life
This seems to be what happens in Natural Canons which are presented almost apologetically in the harmonic transformation of Voice-leading, so as not to frighten or overwhelm the apprentice visitor. Here is a case where the scientific MN components of every chord, the COMMON TONE, the PROPER TONE, the MEDIAN, and the MOTRIX, placed in order of decreasing tension, called Orbits - Orbit 3, Orbit 2, Orbit 1, and Orbit 0, produce an "Orbit chain" 3-2-1-0 (in this case 0-3-2-1) which in turn produces a melodic Orbit Line, which in turn produces a 4-part canon when the first chord is completed. All this without the least human, creative, intuitive interference !
What makes the systematic production of these Natural Canons possible ? Above all, the precise and valid identification of Chord Components - 1. the presence of 4 notes, not 3, 2. the classification of Primary and Secondary notes - the Primary Notes, COMMON TONE and PROPER TONE, being constant, always a perfect fifth apart, members of the series of fifths, the Secondary Notes being variable - the MEDIAN (third) determining the mode of the chord, major or minor, the MOTRIX (sixth or seventh) determining the direction of the chord, sharpening or flattening. This identification imposes the degree of tension of each Chord Component (note), the Orbits, and the Orbit Chains which automatically produce the natural Canons.
The Nature of Composition The art of composition is divided into two disctinct activities - 1. the creation of new, personal material, which applies above all to melody and which copyright protects exclusively, and 2. the techniques of development, which are used extensively in classical music, and even in all the Bridges of popular music.
Natural Canons are the infrastructure of Development The term "sequence" is currently used in academic theory to describe these Natural Canons, more specifically the term "harmonic sequence", although the skeletons of the melodic sequences are also present in their Voice-Leading. MN leaves nothing to chance in these sequences and the options available seem to be infinite, with all the combinations of Metamorphoses and Voice-Leading, plus the possibilities of inversions.
