Work The new song Pick Up The Handkerchief describes the action of the game and acts as a counter-melody to the children's song I Tisket, I Tasket.
A ring of players is formed, about the outside of which circles a child who carries a knotted handkerchief. When the words
“I lost it” are sung, the handkerchief is dropped behind some child of the round. This child picks up the handkerchief, runs
around the circle of players, and drops the handkerchief behind some other child. This continues until every child has had
the handkerchief. ( Songs for children, Page123) (Games and Songs of American Children, page 169)
Lyrics
Performance Always start by establishing the Footsies at Level 0. In this case, both songs are at the same level and will start on L(eft foot), 1+3for I Tisket, I Tasket and 0+3 for Pick Up The Handkerchief. Watch the Pick-up in I Tisket, I Tasket which is just before L. Beat R, L, R before you start singing. Sing I Tisket, I Tasket followed by Pick Up The Handkerchief and make a loop of the 2 songs, leaving no "space" between them. The children, in unison, will gradually join you. Then you divide the participants in 2 equal groups, start the first group singing I Tisket, I Tasket, and when they reach Pick Up The Handkerchief, start the second group singing I Tisket, I Tasket. This produces the polyphony of the 2 simultaneous songs, and the loops in both groups allow you to keep it going as long as required.
